FORT MYERS, Fla. – After having recorded two road wins to start off the 2013 spring dual match season, the FGCU women’s tennis team (2-1) fell to Houston 4-3 in their home opener at the FGCU Tennis Complex on Saturday afternoon.

“I am disappointed that we had opportunities to win, but our players were unable to convert,” said FGCU head coach Jennifer Gabou. “Hats off to Houston, they stepped up big in the big moments.”

The Green and Blue were on the verge of seizing control of the match as they attempted to win the doubles point, but failed to do so as they lost in the second and third doubles positions, both of which in tie breakers.

Despite failing to collect the doubles point, FGCU still had a chance at winning the match as Sarah Means (Wesley Chapel, Fla./Wiregrass Ranch, Fla.) hung tough in her singles match before dropping it in the third set, giving Houston the 4-3 road win.

Freshman Johanna Sterkel (Schwitzen, Germany/Carl-Theodor-Schule HS) continued to find success just as she has since first stepping on campus as she won in the fourth spot for FGCU in straight sets 7-5, 6-4.

Elizabeth Means (Wesley Chapel, Fla./Wiregrass Ranch, Fla.) has also seen victory in her first year at FGCU and saw even more on Saturday as she beat Houston’s Kazinieruk in a hard fought match that Means won 7-5, 7-5 in straight sets.

Junior Bettina Botha (Cape Town, South Africa/De Kuilen HS) picked up the third FGCU single court victory of the day in come back fashion after having dropped the first set to win 4-6, 6-3, 6-3 in the sixth spot.

The Green and Blue will return to action at the FGCU Tennis Complex on Sunday, Feb. 16 against Iowa State at 11:00 a.m. as they look to improve to 3-1 in the 2013 spring season.
