MACON, Ga. – In its first A-Sun road test of the 2013 dual match season, the FGCU women’s tennis team (9-3, 3-0 A-Sun) swept Mercer, 4-0, at the LeRoy Peddy Tennis Center on Friday afternoon.
“It was a long day today with the rain, but we came through when we needed to,” said head coach Jennifer Gabou. “I am seeing improvements in doubles and I am looking forward to tomorrow.”
In a match that was initially intended to begin at 10 a.m., FGCU remained strong despite the start time being pushed back to 2 p.m. as a result of in climate weather in the surrounding area and weather continuing to threaten over the course of the match.
Entering with a 2-1 road record this season, the Eagles were dominant in their first match outside of the state of Florida this season and now sit at 3-1 away from the FGCU Tennis Complex in the 2013 spring dual match season.
FGCU took the doubles point behind a strong showing from Elizabeth Means (Wesley Chapel, Fla./Wiregrass Ranch HS) and Sarah Means (Wesley Chapel, Fla./Wiregrass Ranch HS) in the No. 3 position to win 8-1, along with Gyanna Mandic (Oshowa, Canada/Edison Academies) and Johanna Sterkel (Schwtzingen, Germany/Carl-Theodor-Schule HS) who won 8-1 in the No. 2 spot. The pair of Eagle victories put the visitors up 1-0 heading into the singles matches. FGCU has now taken the singles point in each of the last four matches.
With Bettina Botha (Cape Town, South Africa/De Kuilen HS) playing her singles match from the No. 4 spot, she came through for FGCU to complete a two-set sweep by a 6-3, 6-3 score and give the Eagles a commanding lead over Mercer.
After winning her doubles match in the No. 2 spot, Gyanna Mandic took the same spot on the singles court and put on another successful performance to win 7-5, 6-1 and put a stranglehold on the match with the Eagles just one singles victory of clinching the dual match victory.
A-Sun Player of the Week Sarah Means remained strong in the top singles spot for the Green and Blue by winning 6-4, 6-3 in straight sets to give FGCU a dual match sweep by a score of 4-0 over the Bears.
The remaining singles matches between FGCU and Mercer were not completed since the dual match was already decided in favor of the Green and Blue.
The Green and Blue will continue their road trip in the state of Georgia as they take on Kennesaw State on Saturday, March 23 with the match set to begin at 10 a.m.
