ORLANDO, Fla. – The FGCU women’s tennis team exited the final day of the UCF Knights Invitational by taking home two doubles and two singles wins, marking its first day receiving victories in both draws.

To start the day, FGCU faced Florida Atlantic in a pair of doubles matches, where FGCU claimed wins in both. Sisters Sarah Means (Wesley Chapel, Fla./Wiregrass Ranch HS) and Elizabeth Means (Wesley Chapel, Fla./Wiregrass Ranch HS) teamed up to face opponents they individually beat in Saturday’s singles draw. The sisters remained unbeaten against the FAU duo, breezing to a quick 6-2 victory over Bianca Biglione and Catalina Ene.

Earning the other doubles win for the Green and Blue were Johanna Sterkel (Schwetzingen, Germany/Carl-Theodor-Schule HS) and Bettina Botha (Cape Town, South Africa/De Kuilen HS), earning a 6-2 victory over Kandis Legall and Alexa Ricci.

In Sunday’s afternoon session, FGCU faced host UCF in singles play and fell, 3-2. Preparing for the new style of scoring the ITA will begin implementing in dual matches come January, the matches were played with one ad scoring and a tiebreaker at 5-all.

Both of the FGCU victories came in three sets as the Eagles showed determination until the last point. Securing FGCU’s win in the No. 2 singles slot was Sterkel as she took down Josephine Haraldson, 3-6, 6-5, 6-2, while her doubles partner, Botha, beat Bogna Nowicka, 6-5, 5-6, 5-6.

Taking on opponent Caroline Eberhart in three sets was Sarah Means, but her claim of the second set couldn’t be duplicated in the third as she ultimately suffered a 6-2, 3-6, 6-3 loss.

“We made some good steps forward today,” head coach Courtney Vernon said. “We spoke about the importance of courage and gratefulness while competing. A few of the girls displayed that very well today. We are looking forward to getting back to FGCU as we work to achieve some more of our goals.”

FGCU wraps up the UCF Knights Invitational with five singles victories and a record of 4-2 in doubles. Taking home the singles crown was USF’s Kayla Rizzolo, who beat Sarah Means 6-2,6-4 on Friday. Loreto Alonso-Martinez joined Rizzolo to win the doubles title.

The Eagles return to the fall tournament circuit Oct. 11-13 for the Bedford Cup in Gainesville.
