GAINESVILLE, Fla. – Marked by a second-round doubles victory and two consolation singles wins, day two of the battle for state glory at the Bedford Cup has come to a close.

Still standing in the main doubles draw to represent FGCU in Saturday’s quarterfinals are Johanna Sterkel (Schwetzingen, Germany/Carl-Theodor-Schule HS) and Bettina Botha (Cape Town, South Africa/De Kuilen HS), while Botha, joined by Sarah Means (Wesley Chapel, Fla./Wiregrass Ranch HS), racked up wins to keep them in the singles consolation draw.

“We made some good steps forward today,” head coach Courtney Vernon said. “We set a goal at the beginning of the day and I was excited to see the girls step up and try to achieve that goal. They are showing courage in different ways and I’m looking forward to watching them compete again tomorrow.”

In the doubles round of 16, Sterkel and Botha prevailed through another tough matchup against Sofia Baptista and Clare Mendell of UCF, claiming an 8-6 win. Saturday the pair of Eagles will face Andrea Crespo and Mayablue Staudder-MacDowell of Stetson as they look to push forward into the semifinals.

The Green and Blue raked in two other wins as Sarah Means defeated Majlena Pederson of Florida State 6-4, 7-6 (7), and Botha capped of a perfect day with a 7-5, 3-6, 6-3 win over Florida A&M’s Shantal Blackwood in the singles consolation bracket. Returning to the competition Saturday, Means is set to face Mayablue Staudder-MacDowell of Stetson while Botha opposes Florida’s Stefani Stojic.

Representing the Eagles in the main draw round of 32 and facing top-seeded opponents were Elizabeth Means (Wesley Chapel, Fla./Wiregrass Ranch HS) and Candela Munoz Giron (Alicante, Spain/Troy) who will not return for Saturday’s round of 16. Means fell 6-1, 6-1, to tournament No. 7 seed Loreto Alonso of USF, while Munoz Giron suffered a 6-4, 6-2 defeat to No. 6 seed Kristina Schleich of FSU.
