@FGCU_WTEN Sees Program First At Bedford Cup Third Day

GAINESVILLE, Fla. – As day three of the Bedford Cup began in The Swamp, Johanna Sterkel (Schwetzingen, Germany/Carl-Theodor-Schule HS) and Bettina Botha (Cape Town, South Africa/De Kuilen HS) prepared to take to the baseline for their doubles Quaterfinals match. If the duo was able to secure a win it would make them the all-time furthest-advancing FGCU players in the tournament filled with Florida’s best.

Facing Atlantic-Sun rivals Andrea Crespo and Mayablue Staudder-MacDowell of Stetson, the two Eagles entered the match looking to prove themselves after Botha fell 6-3, 6-0 to Crespo in the first round of the main singles draw. After a back-and-forth battle between skilled players the match went into a tie break. Truly exemplifying what FGCU is all about Sterkel and Botha claimed an 8-7 (3) victory over the Hatters, earning FGCU a spot in the semifinals for the first time.

After a quick break, the two entered their semifinals match against the singles draw No. 1 seed Olivia Janowicz and partner Stefani Stojic from Florida knowing they’d have to play to their best ability if they wanted to secure a spot in the finals. The two put up a good fight, but ultimately fell to the Gators 8-3, which led to FGCU’s dismissal from the doubles draw.

“I’m proud of what Bettina and I accomplished this weekend,” Sterkel said. “I’m glad we played so well against Stetson and we’re able to step it up on important points. It was very exciting to represent our school and play in the semifinals of such a big tournament.”

The Green and Blue saw another victory as Sarah Means (Wesley Chapel, Fla./Wiregrass Ranch HS) defeated Mayablue Staudder-MacDowell of Stetson 6-1, 7-5, in her consolation draw quarterfinals match.

Means will return tomorrow to oppose Florida’s Stefani Stojic, who beat Botha 6-0, 6-2 in their quarterfinals consolation match earlier Saturday.

“The girls competed hard today and I was thankful for the way they fought,” head coach Courtney Vernon said. “They are understanding the process of how to reach their goals. I’m excited for Sarah and the opportunity she has to compete tomorrow. ”
