Athens, Ga. – Two tournaments into a fall season marked by a program-first Bedford Cup semifinals doubles appearance, an inaugural win by an individual and one singles back-draw champion title, the FGCU women’s tennis team looks to extend the success of its fall campaign at the ITA Southeast Regional Championships held at the University of Georgia Friday through Monday.

The four-day event will feature five different draws: a 64-member main singles draw, a 32-member main singles consolation draw, a 32-member doubles main draw, a 16-member B singles draw and a 16-member B doubles draw.
“I am excited for the girls and the opportunity they have to compete at regionals this weekend,” head coach Courtney Vernon said. “This is another great opportunity for them to continue growing and working on their goals.”
2012 ITA Southeast Regionals
Slating five players in last year’s championships, the Eagles picked up one doubles and two singles wins. After losses in the round of 64 led to an early FGCU exit from the main singles draw, Sarah Means (Wesley Chapel, Fla./Wiregrass Ranch HS) picked up one of the biggest singles wins in Division-I program history as she defeated Georgia’s Lilly Kimbell in straight sets in the first round of the consolation bracket. Her younger sister Elizabeth Means (Wesley Chapel, Fla./Wiregrass Ranch HS) also picked up a win in the first round of consolation play, before they both fell in the round of 16. Earning the sole doubles win was Johanna Sterkel (Schwetzingen, Germany/Carl-Theodor-Schule HS) and Bettina Botha (Cape Town, South Africa/De Kuilen HS) with a victory in the first round of the main doubles draw over North Florida
Bedford Cup 2013
In last weekend’s Bedford Cup, the Green and Blue saw a number of first-time successes. Troy transfer Candela Munoz Giron (Alicante, Spain/Troy) picked up her first win as an Eagle with a perfect 6-0, 6-0 shutout over Valentine Beresinste of Bethune-Cookman in the first round of the main singles draw. Doubles partners Botha and Sterkel became the furthest-advancing FGCU players ever as they competed in the doubles main draw semifinals. Highlighting the weekend was Sarah Mean’s overall victory of the singles consolation draw.
Mean, Green, Winning Machine
Leading the team in total wins this season is junior Sarah Means who holds a 6-3 singles and in currently on a five-match win streak. Means will take on the tournament No. 16 seed Kourtney Keegan of Florida in the first round of the main singles draw a 2 p.m. on Friday.
Mini Means
After winning her match in the Bedford Cup opening round, Elizabeth Means (Wesley Chapel, Fla./Wiregrass Ranch HS) looks to advance beyond the round of 32 this weekend. She begins her journey with a first-round match in the main singles draw against Monique Albuquerque of Miami on Friday at 2:30 p.m.
Serve It Sterkel
Sitting with an even two wins and two losses, Sterkel hopes to put more tallies on the win side during this competitive tournament. She’ll start that task with a first round match in the main singles draw against Paola Garrido of Georgia Southern at Noon on Friday.
Sister Sister
Holding an even 2-2 doubles record, the Means sisters begin the weekend with a match against the USF team of Fanny Fracassi and Olaya Garrido-Rivas. The first-round match is the second time the sisters will face the pair of Hatters, as they competed against each other in the UCF Invite earlier this season, when the Eagles fell 8-7.
