MIAMI – With three tournaments in the books, the FGCU women’s tennis team looks for a solid finish to the 2013 fall season as it travels to Miami for the annual FIU Invitational. The tournament is slated to run Friday through Sunday and will feature four singles and two doubles draws composed of players from FGCU, FIU, Liberty and Barry.

“We are looking forward to competing in our last fall event this weekend,” head coach Courtney Vernon said. “This is another great opportunity for the ladies to get a few matches in. I know they are looking forward to playing this weekend and the privilege to get on the court once more this fall.”

CORE FOUR

The Leader
Sitting at the top after earning six singles wins this fall season is Sarah Means (Wesley Chapel, Fla./Wiregrass Ranch HS). Not only does she lead the team in singles victories, but her four losses rank second lowest. She begins her weekend with a first-round match in the No. 1 singles draw facing Elisabeth Abanda of Barry at 1 p.m. on Friday.

The Balanced Record
Sitting with an even 3-3 fall singles record, sophomore Johanna Sterkel (Schwetzingen, Germany/Carl-Theodor-Schule HS) aims to end the fall campaign by collecting a few more wins. Sterkel will begin with a first-round match in the No. 1 singles draw against Carlotta Orlando of FIU at 1 p.m. on Friday.

The Veteran
Since the team did not compete in last year’s FIU Invite, senior Bettina Botha (Cape Town, South Africa/De Kuilen HS) is the only one of the four who has ever competed in this tournament. In the 2011 Invitational, Botha dropped both her singles matches but teamed up with former teammate Morgan Betchel to pick up a doubles win over a pair from FIU. Botha Looks to pick up her third singles win of the fall season as she plays her first match of the No. 3 singles draw against Liberty’s Annisha Domenech at 2 p.m. on Friday.

The Up-and-Coming
After picking up a win at the first two tournaments of the fall, but seeing a winless third tournament, Elizabeth Means (Wesley Chapel, Fla./Wiregrass Ranch HS) looks to get back on the winning track with this weekend serving as the final opportunity. Playing in the No. 2 singles draw, Means will square off against Belen Rivera of Liberty at 2 p.m. on Friday.

The Sister Act
Sitting at 2-3 in fall doubles play, the Means sisters will take to the court for the last time of 2013 with a first-round match in the No. 1 doubles draw against Barry’s Elisabeth Abanda and Karina Goia at 11 a.m. on Friday.

The Perfect Pair
While differing in an array of things from style of play, to hair color, to the continent they grew up on, when doubles partners Sterkel and Botha take to the court there is no denying that their differences combine to form a complete pair. Leading the Eagles with five wins this season, the duo will begin play in the No. 1 doubles draw on Friday at 11 a.m. against Tina Moharcic and Nina Nagode of FIU.
