MIAMI – After day one of the FIU Panther Invitational, the FGCU women’s tennis team left the courts having added two more wins to its fall record.

“Today was another learning experience and opportunity to grow,” head coach Courtney Vernon said. “We faced some challenges on the court, but they brought moments we can learn from. We’re thankful for another day of competition tomorrow.”

Highlighting the day as they earned victories for the Green and Blue were Sarah Means (Wesley Chapel, Fla./Wiregrass Ranch HS) and Bettina Botha (Cape Town, South Africa/De Kuilen HS). Almost effortlessly earning a spot in the second round of the top-flight singles draw was Means after a 6-1, 6-0 defeat over Elisabeth Abanda of Barry. Means returns to the court tomorrow to face FIU’s Nina Nagode at 1:30 p.m. Picking up the other win in straight-sets was Botha with a 6-4, 6-1 triumph over Liberty’s Annisha Domenech. She will return to the baseline tomorrow to face Kamila Paveolkova of FIU.

Dropping matches in the first round of singles play were Johanna Sterkel (Schwetzingen, Germany/Carl-Theodor-Schule HS), who suffered a 6-3, 6-0 loss to Carlotta Orlando of FIU, and Elizabeth Means (Wesley Chapel, Fla./Wiregrass Ranch HS), falling 7-5, 6-2 to Belen Rivera of Liberty. They will both return to play tomorrow in the consolation draw.

Day one of the invitational began with doubles play, where the Eagles did not see the start they had hoped for. The Means sisters dropped an 8-2 match to Barry’s Elisabeth Abanda and Karina Goia while Sterkel and Botha put up a hard fight on Tina Moharcic and Nina Nagode of FIU before falling 8-5.

Day two of the Panther Invitational begins tomorrow at 9 a.m. as both pairs from FGCU play in the doubles consolation draw.
