FORT MYERS, Fla. – Riding Friday’s 6-1 victory over Iowa State, the FGCU women’s tennis team picked up a phenomenal 12 wins in day one of the FGCU Spring Invite. After the first round of doubles and two rounds of singles six Eagles are still alive in the main draws.

“I am very pleased with the amount of matches the team got to play today,” head coach Courtney Vernon said. “It was cold and windy this morning which served as a great opportunity for the girls to be mentally challenged with their game. They were able to learn and grow a lot from today’s events and we’re all looking forward to another day of competition tomorrow!”

In the first round of the A singles draw all three Eagles picked up wins to advance to the quarterfinals. Highlight play in the quarterfinals was Sarah Means (Wesley Chapel, Fla./Wiregrass Ranch HS) as she easily took down Biljana Milosevska of Arkansas State 6-3, 6-2. Means will face Polina Konop in the semifinals on Sunday.

After two rounds both Bettina Botha (Cape Town, South Africa/De Kuilen HS) and Elizabeth Means (Wesley Chapel, Fla./Wiregrass Ranch HS) remain alive in the B singles draw and are through to the semifinals. Botha’s road to the semis came after straight-set wins over Claire-Mitchell Andrews of FAU (7-5, 6-1) and Lyndsey Boos of FAU (7-6 (2), 6-2). Means took a similar path collecting wins over Victoria Pisani of Arkansas State (6-2, 6-1) and Iowa State’s Ana Gasparovic (6-1, 6-1).

In the opening round of doubles play two pairs from FGCU picked up wins. The Means sisters took down a pair from Northwestern State 7-5 in the A draw while Breana Stampfli (Port of Spain, Trinidad and Tobago/St. Joseph’s Convent) joined Gyanna Mandic (Oshowa, Canada/Edison Academies) to defeat Caroline Andersen and Emma Waites of Iowa State 6-4.

The Green and Blue will return to the action of open weekend with day two of the FGCU Spring Invitational on Sunday at 9:00 a.m.
