MACON, Ga. – Remaining undefeated in singles play this season, junior Candela Munoz (Alicante, Spain/Troy) picked up her first, and FGCU’s sixth, Atlantic Sun Conference Women’s Tennis Player of the Week award, as announced by the league office Wednesday morning.
The well-deserved honor is a result of Munoz’s three wins last weekend, highlighted by her defeat of No. 9 Miami’s Brittany Dubins. In the No. 6 match against the Hurricanes, Dubins took the first set 6-2, but Munoz flipped the score in the second to knot the match at one set apiece. In the 10-point tiebreaker, Munoz kept focused en route to her 10-8 win and secure of the match, 2-6, 6-2, 1-0 (10-8). In the No. 6 match vs. FIU, Munoz won 6-0, 6-2, and 6-1, 6-0 in the No. 5 match against B-CU.
The Eagles’ only undefeated player, Munoz has won each of her seven contests this year. She defeated six of her opponents in straight sets and is claiming victories by an average score of 6-2.
The Green and Blue picked up their first conference honor of the season as Sarah Means (Wesley Chapel, Fla./Wiregrass Ranch HS) was named Player of the Week on Jan. 22 after opening the season with a No. 1 singles win over Iowa State and collecting the Flight A singles title at the FGCU Spring Invitational.
The Green and Blue will continue action when they travel to Boca Raton for a dual match against Florida Atlantic on Feb. 22 at 1:30 p.m. For complete coverage of FGCU women’s tennis, follow us on Twitter at @FGCU_WTEN and visit www.FGCUAthletics.com where full recaps and results will be available at the end of each day.
