JACKSONVILLE – FGCU women’s tennis junior Candela Munoz (Alicante, Spain/Troy) added to her list of postseason accolades on Sunday following the Atlantic Sun Championship, as she was named to the All-Tournament team.
Munoz, a member of the 2014 All-Conference First Team, went unbeaten in last weekend’s A-Sun championship winning two singles matches and one doubles contest.
“I am very happy for Candela as she is definitely deserving of being named to this group,” head coach Courtney Vernon said. “She has matured greatly since the fall and has worked extremely hard to become an unbelievable competitor on the court.”
In the Eagles’ quarterfinal matchup against No. 6 Lipscomb, Munoz and doubles Breana Stampfli (Port of Spain, Trinidad and Tobago/St. Joseph’s Convent) posted the first win for FGCU, defeating Lorena Djuknic and Sierra Troxel a powerful 8-2 in the third slot. In singles play the junior clinched the 4-0 victory for the Green and blue after a dominant 6-1, 6-1 win over Jenny Borckin the fourth position.
Munoz’ winning ways were duplicated in FGCU’s semifinals contest against No. 2 ETSU as she handed Sofia Espana a straight-set loss, 6-3, 6-2, at No. 4 singles.
Munoz ends her first season in Green and Blue with a dual match record of 18-2, and remained nearly perfect in conference play going 9-1 throughout the regular season and the A-Sun Championship.
FGCU finished its inaugural season under Vernon with a program-high seven wins over A-Sun opponents and a Division-I best 14-8 overall record.
