FORT MYERS, Fla. -
Chase Kriebel worked five scoreless innings to start as Florida Gulf Coast University fell 5-1 to Bethune-Cookman University Sunday afternoon at Swanson Stadium in the finale of a three-game set.
The Eagles (2-5) were stymied offensively, collecting just seven hits on the day with only one of those going for extra-bases. It was a day for working to manufacture runs on both sides as the two teams had 17 singles between each other.
Kriebel started on the mound and worked five scoreless innings, giving up four hits and a walk while fanning five. The Wildcats pushed ahead with a run in the sixth off
Davian Garcia, though Garcia (0-1) would pitch a scoreless seventh.
After Bethune-Cookman (4-3) scored three runs in the eighth, the Eagles put together their best offensive inning in a late effort to tie.
Charles Davalan legged out an infield hit, moved up to second on a wild pitch, then came home to score on a double to left center by
Ian Farrow to put FGCU on the board.
Robert Moya battled to draw a walk, then
Harrison Povey got plunked to load the bases with only one out.
That's where the rally would come to an end. A pop out and a fly out on back-to-back 3-1 counts would bring an end to the inning. Bethune-Cookman would tack on an insurance run in the ninth and the guests would take the win.
Daniel Gaviria (1-0) worked six innings and allowed four hits to earn the win, with Pablo Torres getting the last five outs to earn the save for the Wildcats.
The Eagles will be back in action Wednesday night in Coral Gables against the University of Miami. First pitch is set for 6 p.m.
